CONSERVATORY

Following the waterways of Pulse World One, Sonic Clown and Brain enter an immense ecological complex where ancient architecture and living vegetation have grown inseparable. As they explore its abandoned cultivation terraces and intricate water channels, Brain becomes fascinated by the unfamiliar plant life, unaware that something has already attached itself to him. The Conservatory appears deserted, yet its waters continue to flow through a system whose original purpose remains only partly understood.

Waterworks

Following the Conservatory's waterways deeper into the ancient hydraulic system, Sonic Clown and Brain arrive at the Waterworks. Here, the channels converge around an intricate network of gates, basins, and mechanisms that continue to regulate the flow. A solitary priest notices something troubling about Brain. The unfamiliar spores he encountered in the Conservatory have begun to affect him. The priest prepares a strange plant known as Velum Succor, releasing its substance into a small basin. As Brain undergoes the treatment, the spores begin to loosen their hold. The intervention succeeds. Though Sonic Clown and Brain are free to continue their journey, they leave with more questions than answers about the priest and the ancient system he maintains.

Alluvial Reach

Leaving the Waterworks behind, Sonic Clown and Brain follow the widening channels into the Alluvial Reach. Here, the river has spread across an immense landscape of sediment, broken structures, and waterways that have changed course countless times. Among the deposits, unfamiliar materials catch their attention. Small creatures move through the shallows, and one appears particularly interested in the strange fragments scattered along the riverbank. Sonic Clown and Brain linger long enough to observe, but the meaning of what they've found remains uncertain. Beyond the Reach, the terrain begins to rise.

Open Highlands

Leaving the Alluvial Reach, Sonic Clown and Brain climb toward the Open Highlands. The ancient waterways narrow into younger streams, winding through broad grasslands and exposed stone. For the first time in their journey across Pulse World One, the landscape opens in every direction. Wind moves freely across the uplands. The distant mountains seem almost close enough to touch, yet each rise reveals another stretch of country beyond. With Brain recovered from his encounter in the Conservatory, the two travelers continue without urgency, following the streams toward their distant beginnings. Far ahead, the land rises toward the Headwater Basin.

Headwater Basin

Following the narrowing streams beyond the Open Highlands, Sonic Clown and Brain arrive at the Headwater Basin. Here, the great waterways of Pulse World One begin as tiny springs emerging from stone, shallow pools gathering beneath the grasses, and thin currents finding their first paths downhill. The two travelers pause to explore. Strange little creatures move among the pools, while wind and running water produce a delicate arrangement of overlapping sounds. Brain listens closely. What seemed like a single river farther below is revealed here as countless smaller movements, each contributing something of its own. For a while, Sonic Clown and Brain simply wander among the springs. Beyond the basin, the familiar waterways begin to disappear, and the outer reaches of Pulse World One await.

Outer Pulse World One

Leaving the Headwater Basin behind, Sonic Clown and Brain cross the high ridges where the last familiar streams begin to disappear. The lush waterways that guided them through the Conservatory have given way to exposed stone, sparse vegetation, and an unfamiliar silence. With no river left to follow, the two travelers must find their own direction. The 13th Note arrives overhead, offering a view of the changing landscape from above. The immense watershed now lies behind them, its interconnected waterways giving way to terrain neither traveler recognizes. Far across the dry country, an enormous cleft cuts through the land. Its depths are hidden from view, and its relationship to the surrounding landscape remains uncertain. Sonic Clown and Brain turn toward it, drawn onward by the possibility of another passage.

Liminal Cleft

Approaching the enormous fissure they spotted from the outer highlands, Sonic Clown and Brain discover that the Liminal Cleft is far more than a break in the earth. Within its towering walls, waterfalls descend through layers of ancient stone, suspended bridges, and vegetation thriving in the sheltered depths. As they venture farther into the cleft, they encounter unfamiliar wildlife adapted to its sheer cliffs. A magnificent dark-coated creature watches from a rocky ledge, its iridescent markings catching the light. It neither approaches nor retreats, leaving the travelers to continue their exploration. The deeper they look, the more difficult it becomes to understand how the passages connect. Bridges span impossible distances, and familiar landmarks seem to shift in relation to one another. Somewhere within this vast vertical landscape lies a route forward, though neither Sonic Clown nor Brain yet understands where it leads.

The Crossing

Leaving the depths of the Liminal Cleft, Sonic Clown and Brain discover a passage stretching between towering formations of stone. At first, it appears to be another ancient route through the cliffs, but as they advance, the landscape begins to behave in unfamiliar ways. Bridges connect places that seem impossibly far apart. Rock formations remain solid beneath their feet, yet their positions no longer agree with the distances the travelers have crossed. Water continues to flow, and the surrounding terrain appears ordinary in isolation, but the relationships between these familiar things have become increasingly difficult to understand. Sonic Clown and Brain press onward, following the passage as the colors of the landscape begin to change. The familiar blues and greens of their journey give way to deeper reds, rust-colored stone, and strange formations ahead. Whatever lies beyond the Crossing, they are no longer certain that the path behind them would lead back the same way.

Borderlands

Emerging from the Crossing, Sonic Clown and Brain find themselves in a landscape unlike anything they have encountered in Pulse World One. Familiar waterways give way to rust-colored terrain, towering stone formations, and strange structures stretching across impossible distances. Above them, an enormous ringed celestial body hangs in an unfamiliar sky. The transition is difficult to explain. The Borderlands do not appear to belong entirely to any Pulse World, yet they are more than a passage between them. Here, the familiar relationships between distance, direction, and place seem to have changed. With the route behind them no longer certain, Sonic Clown and Brain press forward into this extraordinary territory. Whatever awaits them beyond the Borderlands remains unknown.
